Mucin expression, epigenetic regulation and patient survival: A toolkit of prognostic biomarkers in epithelial cancers

چکیده
Twenty mucin genes have been identified and classified in two groups (encoding secreted membrane-bound proteins). Secreted mucins participate mucus formation by assembling a 3-dimensional network via oligomerization, whereas are anchored to the outer membrane mediating extracellular interactions cell signaling. Both associated with carcinogenesis progression epithelial cancers, therefore considered as potential therapeutic targets. In present review, we discuss link between expression patterns patient survival propose prognosis biomarkers of cancers (esophagus, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal, lung, breast or ovarian cancers). We also investigate relationship overall TCGA dataset. particular, epigenetic mechanisms regulating gene expression, such aberrant DNA methylation histone modification, interesting they diagnosis significance. Indeed, hypomethylation has shown be was linked colon cancer pancreatic patients. Finally describe non-coding RNAs that may serve biomarkers. Altogether concomitant knowledge specific mucin-pattern regulation could translated better specificity/sensitivity performance several cancers.

Genetics and epigenetics coregulate the cancer initiation and progression. Epigenetic mechanisms include DNA methylation, histone modification, chromatin remodeling, and noncoding RNAs. Aberrant epigenetic modifications play a fundamental role in the formation of gastrointestinal cancers. Advances in epigenetics offer a better understanding of the carcinogenesis and provide new insights into th...
متن کاملPrognostic Significance of Mucin Antigen MUC1 in Various Human Epithelial Cancers
Accumulating evidence indicates that mucin antigen MUC1 plays a fundamental role in the initiation and progression of several types of epithelial carcinomas. However, whether the expression of MUC1 on tumor cells is associated with patients' survival remains controversial. Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases, and Grey literatu...
متن کاملBiomarkers for epithelial ovarian cancers.
Epithelial carcinoma of the ovary is one of the most common gynecological malignancies and the fifth most frequent cause of cancer death in women. Currently blood test of advanced epithelial tumors are reflected in a high level of CA 125 antigen. However, it is not a good marker for early stage tumors, and may yield false positives. Clearly, there is a need for better understanding of the molec...
متن کاملMucin gene expression in ovarian cancers.
Ovarian cancer is a highly lethal disease with metastases present in the majority of patients at the time of diagnosis. The molecular mechanisms underlying the metastatic process of this cancer are not well understood. One family of cell-associated and secreted glycoproteins, the mucin glycoproteins, has been implicated in events leading to metastasis of several epithelial cancers including gas...
